Our client, a major membership organization, is looking for a Media Relations Specialist to join their team in Washington, DC.  This position is responsible for monitoring media trends, analyzing and reporting on media coverage, and assisting senior staff with various media relations projects. This is a one-year contract assignment.

 

Responsibilities

  • Tracks and provides analysis of relevant news stories across multiple issue areas, and produces analytics reports
  • Drafts news releases, blog posts, social media posts, podcasts, and other content
  • Provides general media relations support to the team, including developing media lists, distributing and posting news releases, handling media event logistics, etc.
  • Fields general media inquiries from the media relations phone and email, and routes to appropriate media relations team member in a timely manner
  • Tracks media coverage and monitors relevant issues throughout the day, and ensures the media relations team is aware of developing stories
  • Monitors and contributes to Media Relations Twitter account
  • Posts news releases to the Press Center
  • Builds and updates media lists; assists with distribution of press releases
  • Proactively identifies and interprets media trends both social and traditional, and important stories, and distributes to appropriate internal audiences
  • Provides planning/logistical support for media briefings/events as needed
  • Consistently coordinates with stakeholders across the organization to ensure the media tracking and analyses are informing and enhancing our communications needs

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related discipline with approximately 3 years of relevant experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) as well as Cision or other media monitoring platforms and media databases
  • Familiarity and comfort with managing and tracking social media
  • Strong communications skills, including writing, reporting and research
  • Excellent customer service skills, on the phone, in person and in responding to emails
  • High degree of comfort working in fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision in a collaborative team environment
